“When you know what to think you are ready to compete. When you know how to think you are ready to win.”
Tim Grover
“Train your people for Critical Thinking, not just compliance.”
David Marquet
Are you teaching your people what to think, or how to think?
Are you training your people to compete, or to win?
Are you training your people for critical thinking, or compliance?
Are you training your people for decision making and problem solving, or to do what they are told?
Is your physical skills training technique focused, or are you teaching principles and concepts that can be applied in any environment?
Is your training instructor heavy (step by step do a, then b, then c…) or do you teach foundations then create opportunities for your people to experience desirable difficulties in their training and allow critical think, problem solving and learning to take place?
Critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, and sense making are all skills that need to be taught, reinforced, practiced and refined throughout people’s careers beginning at the Academy.
If your Academy model is based on the “shut your mouth and do what you are told” model, you are doing a disservice to your new officers, to your agency, to your community and to the profession.
If you are not reinforcing the skills of critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, and sense making at in-service training and through Roll Call training you are doing a disservice to your people, your agency, your community and the profession.
If you are not training your frontline supervisors to deliver training in critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, and sense making in 10-minute increments at Roll Call then you are doing a disservice to your supervisors, your people, your agency, your community and the profession.
Train your people throughout their careers how to think critically and set them up to win.
